In Denmark the Orienteering Federation has started to use LIDAR scans, which according to rumours produce very accurate contors (down to 0.5 meter contours) and even quite usable contours in areas with dense vegetation. At the moment I'm looking into prices and available scans from the New Zealand. Read more on this technique through the links below.

Selwyn Palmer knows alot about what LIDAR is available and how good it is. It was used for the Auckland Sprint Champs map - see RouteGadget for example of the map
ECan, CCC and Waimak district joined forces to get some lidar info for the Waimakariri and Ashley floodplains - perhaps most of it a bit too flat...but it probably includes the coastal dune areas. I think there may be plans for the Halswell catchment too - not sure if that will include any of the Port Hills on that side or not. Try Ryan Elley at Ecan (one at a time please).
